IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE MAPUCHE POLITICAL PRISONERS ON HUNGER STRIKE AND AGAINST THE RACISM OF THE CHILEAN STATE

Rodrigo Curipán, spokesperson for the Mapuche comuneros on hunger strike, refers to the current situation of criminalization against his people and the relationship with current struggles.

27 Mapuche political prisoners are currently on hunger strike, calling for the Chilean state to accept their legitimate demands. Among them is Machi Celestino Cordova, an ancestral authority, who has been on hunger strike for more than 90 days, and is in life-threatening condition.

The Chilean government has been completely indifferent to this situation, to the point of denying the existence of political prisoners in the country and encouraging violence against the Mapuche communities through the recent statements of the new Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Victor Perez.

We demand that the Chilean State applies ILO Convention 169 (The Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention 169 of the International Labour Organisation) articles 7, 8, 9 and 10, in relation to the treatment of Mapuche and non-Mapuche prisoners in the country’s prisons. And we are calling for the government to urgently seek a sincere and unprejudiced dialogue with the communities, especially with the strikers and their representatives.
